Debbie’s illustrative watercolor paintings are rendered with a use of dry brush combined with washes to create a very detailed and dynamic painting. The paint is also “lifted” from the surface to create translucent effects and details. Debbie photographs her reference, or works from images taken during the 1900’s. This is the first step in creating her timeless images of animals, children and adults interacting together and the history.

Debbie’s paintings often develop from timeless emotion and memories of herself. This emotion is then instilled in the viewer. Debbie’s paintings reach into the soul of the viewer, grabbing that special relationship between the horse and the human, bringing out the excitement, passion and love that we hold for the horse.

“Working on images, that include animals and their humans, brings me back to my childhood and growing up with horses. I couldn’t fathom the thought of anyone not having a horse, when I was a child. I lived and breathed horses and I was constantly drawing and painting them. I’m still exploring this obsession that girls and women have for horses through my art. I will never tire of trying to figure out this emotional connection that I have with the horse and the bonds that others feel with the horse.”

Debbie’s depictions of places are also created with a timeless emotion, generating questions within the viewer of her work. Often these questions are answered by the viewer when they dig a little deeper into their own experiences. The places of the past and past lives are important to Debbie as she works to bring awareness to those who were here before us.

100% acid free Museum quality, hot press and cold press, Watercolor board, as well as Arches Watercolor paper, are used for her Watercolor paintings. This lends Debbie to achieve high detail and heavy saturation of color while keeping them archival.
